The World Cup Whistleblower
December 2022
We were commissioned by the human rights organisation Equidem to make a short documentary investigating the alleged abuses of migrant workers which took place in the construction of the stadia in Qatar.
Anish - a Nepali national - has returned from Qatar after spending 22 months building the Lusail Stadium, which hosted the World Cup final. As a huge football fan himself, he was excited to be playing his part in the development of the biggest sporting event in the world, and had been promised a good wage to support his family back home. But what he discovered when he arrived was far from what he expected…
We travelled to rural Nepal to interview him and his family, hear about his personal story, his love of football and Lionel Messi, and his reasons for going and staying out there.
The abuses he was subjected to and the cover up he witnessed make it a compelling and powerful first-person account, giving the viewer an insight into the large number of people truly affected by this.
We were delighted when our interview with him was featured on PBS News, and was a central feature on an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
Watch the film, and let's start a conversation. Let's be the voice these workers never had!
